The space
The Old homestead was built in 1800 and added to around 1850. You will find copies of deeds and the original land grant, signed by James Monroe, by the front door.
An example of painstaking renovations includes the removal of layers of whitewash and paint from huge fossil rocks in the chimney located in the kitchen (addition of 1850). Workmen used Coke and a wire brush.
Many of the furnishings were built by Pete Brinkmann, who purchased the Old Homestead from John Grove. The living room couch and various chairs and lampshades were recovered by Constance Dowrick.
The living room contains a fireplace-style wood stove. A 32-inch smart TV with Pluto TV and a Blu-ray, gives you the options of TV or streaming.
Three bedrooms are upstairs. They are decorated with antique, period, and whimsical furnishings. In the 2nd bedroom, there is a fireplace romantically filled with candles. The third bedroom offers a four-poster maple bed with a memory foam mattress and a cooling mattress pad. NOTE: bedroom (#3) is a "captured room". It can only be reached by going through an adjoining door with bedroom #2, or from the outside deck. The 1st bedroom offers a single bed.
You can relax on the deck or nap in the new hammock near the front porch. Sit on the back patio and watch wildlife¹. Outside pillows and blankets are stashed in a kitchen closet. A propane gas grill is on the back patio. Five lawn chairs (stored in the laundry room) can be used for the fire bowl in the backyard or for outings. Outside fires depend on local fire ratings and wind gusts being below 10 miles per hour. Please keep the metal screen on the fire bowl at all times. Other outdoor activities include badminton, bocce ball, catch-and-release fishing and hiking.
Smart TV, Many DVDs, VCR tapes & CDs are stored in TV/audio cabinet. Books are stored in 2 bookcases upstairs for your use. Games are stored in the downstairs hall chest.
